User-friendly infrastructure for fast charging

EWE expands the fast-charging network nationwide

Through its mobility subsidiary EWE Go, EWE is playing a key role in making Germany’s transition to sustainable mobility a success. The company is expanding the fast-charging infrastructure across Germany – both in partnership with other companies and as a co-operator of the Deutschlandnetz.

A user-friendly and high-performance charging infrastructure is crucial for the success of the transition to sustainable mobility. According to its Master Plan Infrastructure II, the German government aims to establish one million public and barrier-free charging points by 2030, positioning Germany as a global leader in electromobility. EWE supports this transition through EWE Go, which is driving the nationwide expansion of the charging infrastructure.

Expanding the fast-charging network

As a Charge Point Operator (CPO), EWE Go currently operates more than 3,000 charging points across Germany – all of which run on 100% green electricity. This makes EWE Go the market leader in north-west Germany and one of the largest operators of public charging infrastructure nationwide.

EWE Go is continuously expanding a comprehensive fast-charging network, particularly at locations where EV drivers can conveniently combine charging with everyday activities, such as shopping or taking breaks on longer journeys. To achieve this, EWE Go collaborates with partners that operate high-traffic locations. For example, as part of a cooperation with McDonald's, EWE Go is equipping all McDrive locations in Germany with fast-charging stations. Additionally, starting in 2025, EWE Go will install and operate fast-charging stations at several hundred Lidl stores across Germany as part of a strategic partnership with Lidl.

Participation in the Deutschlandnetz

EWE Go, together with its partner, the Essen-based infrastructure company Hochtief, is one of ten companies that were awarded a contract by the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport in September 2023 to participate in the Deutschlandnetz. As part of this initiative, the federal government aims to install over 1,000 new fast-charging stations with approximately 9,000 charging points nationwide. The project is designed to close remaining gaps in the charging network, particularly along highways and in rural or less densely populated areas. It is one of the largest charging infrastructure projects in Germany.

EWE Go and Hochtief will finance, plan, install, and operate 850 fast-charging points within the North-West and West regions as part of the Deutschlandnetz. To implement the project, the two partners have founded the joint venture EWE Go HOCHTIEF Ladepartner GmbH & Co KG. The charging stations will be installed in the German states of North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, Bremen, and Hamburg, as well as parts of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein.
