EWE connects energy, telecommunications, IT, and mobility, enabling the company to actively shape both the energy transition and digitalization. In expanding renewable energy, EWE focuses on four key investment trends: electrification, digitalization, decentralization, and decarbonization.

Energy as the Core Business

For nearly 100 years, energy has been at the heart of EWE’s activities. As an integrated company, it covers the entire energy value chain, from generation to distribution networks and retail supply. Customers benefit from a progressively climate-neutral energy mix, modern infrastructure, innovative energy solutions, and comprehensive services across all business areas. The energy market is undergoing a fundamental transformation towards a climate-neutral future. This shift presents new challenges for infrastructure, generation, and product offerings, but it also opens up significant opportunities in climate protection, digital inclusion, and increasing competition.

EWE identified the importance of renewable energies early on and has been committed to its expansion since the 1980s. Today, the energy transition is the company’s primary focus. Its strategic direction includes the development of renewable energy sources, the expansion of EV charging infrastructure, and the establishment of a hydrogen industry in north-west Germany. By integrating electricity, heat, telecommunications, and mobility, EWE is driving a holistic approach to the energy transition.

Stefan Dohler, Vorstandsvorsitzender EWE AG
We are at the beginning of an era of transformation towards green technologies. The challenge will be to finance these energy investments largely through our own economic strength while remaining competitive.
EWE CEO Stefan Dohler

We act economically and sustainably, focusing on avoiding and reducing emissions. For us, offsetting is only a second-best option. EWE has set itself the goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2035 — while bringing along the regions it supplies and its customers. Even today, northwestern Germany is around ten years ahead of the rest of the country in integrating renewable energies. In further expanding renewable energy, we follow four investment trends: electrification, digitalization, decentralization, and decarbonization.

Electrification

Electrification represents the shift from conventional energy sources to green electricity in various sectors, such as mobility and industrial production. EWE is significantly increasing its investment in renewable energy generation, strengthening the power grid, and expanding charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. The company is also developing alternative heating solutions in its network regions to support this transformation.

Digitalization

The rapid advancement of digitalization across all economic and social sectors has led to an increased demand for data bandwidth. To meet this demand and accelerate network expansion, EWE is heavily investing in fiber-optic networks. By improving infrastructure and connection speeds, the company is ensuring that households, businesses, and industries have access to high-performance digital solutions.

Decentralization

As the energy transition progresses, decentralized energy supply solutions are becoming increasingly important. EWE is supporting this shift by expanding smart grids that allow for more flexible and resilient energy distribution. Additionally, the company is investing in technologies that enable customers to generate and manage their own energy, increasing self-sufficiency and grid stability.

Decarbonization

The core objective of decarbonization is to generate energy without producing greenhouse gases, thereby mitigating climate change. EWE has made the development of a hydrogen economy in northern Germany one of its top priorities. Hydrogen technology enables the storage and transport of climate-neutral energy, and EWE’s network region provides ideal conditions for hydrogen production and storage. In addition to achieving its own climate neutrality by 2035, the company is committed to building an energy infrastructure that will support the wider transition to climate-friendly energy.

Key Drivers of Success

EWE has identified several strategic levers for successfully advancing a sustainable energy supply. A strong customer-centric approach remains at the core, as trust-based customer relationships are essential for providing integrated and innovative energy solutions. The modernization and optimization of infrastructure play a crucial role in ensuring a reliable and efficient energy supply.

By integrating electricity, heat, telecommunications, and mobility, EWE is actively shaping the energy transition. Smart data usage enables the company to generate digital value and enhance cross-industry data networking. Performance and cost leadership are fundamental to EWE’s strategy, ensuring continuous improvements in expertise, execution capabilities, and efficiency.

Operating in an increasingly dynamic market requires constant adaptation. EWE firmly believes that diversity within its corporate culture is key to driving innovation and developing solutions that will shape the future of energy. The company is committed to remaining at the forefront of the industry by combining experience, technological expertise, and sustainable investments.
