We are on our way to the future of energy supply. The Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) stipulates that Germany’s electricity consumption will be fully supplied by renewable energy sources by 2045. At EWE, we want to actively help shape the future of energy supply, drawing on our decades of experience. One thing is clear: our modern life requires more and more electricity.
On to the Future – with Renewable Energies from EWE
We are expanding renewable energy sourcesEWE is actively shaping the energy transition. Northwestern Germany benefits from our climate-friendly energy supply through wind power, photovoltaics, and green hydrogen. Together with our customers, we are working towards a green energy future. Because climate protection concerns us all!
We Are Almost Climate-Neutral Already
By 2030, Germany’s CO₂ emissions must be reduced by almost two-thirds compared to 1990. According to the Climate Protection Act, the country is to be climate-neutral just 15 years later. An important component of this is the conversion of the energy supply to renewable sources such as wind power, solar energy, and green hydrogen. At EWE, we have nearly reached this goal already: we provide our private and business customers with 100 percent green electricity. Our goal: a climate-friendly energy supply that is entirely based on climate-neutral renewable sources – not in 2045, but ten years earlier.
The Northwest of Germany, the home of EWE, meets all requirements to become Germany’s future energy hub. In the EWE region, there is ample wind to produce renewable energy and green hydrogen, there are ideal soil conditions to store this hydrogen in caverns, and the region has direct access to maritime transport routes. In addition, the region demonstrates an extensive grid infrastructure, an excellent research landscape, and ambitious companies with decades of experience. All these factors in combination provide the Northwest region with the potential to become the powerhouse of the climate-neutral energy system of the future.
Already today, the Northwest is about ten years ahead of the rest of the country in integrating renewable energy. And we are further transforming the energy sector in our region along the four key innovation fields: electrification, digitalization, decentralization, and decarbonization – all while ensuring a secure energy supply.
We are Investing in the Energy Transition
At EWE, the energy transition is not just a futuristic vision but part of our everyday business. That’s why EWE plans to invest more than 16 billion euros in green infrastructure and digital inclusion in the coming years – for example, in green hydrogen, the supply of renewable or climate-neutral heating and cooling, as well as in smart electricity grids.
By the end of the decade, one of our most important partnerships for climate-neutral energy supply – Alterric – will invest 3.6 billion euros in additional facilities for renewable energy supply, thereby more than doubling the installed capacity. EWE and Alterric generate renewable energy primarily with photovoltaics and wind power. Expanding renewable energy sources such as wind or solar power is no uncharted territory for us. As early as the 1980s, we at EWE installed our first onshore wind turbines. Climate protection and sustainable solutions have always been part of our corporate DNA.

Wind Power
There’s plenty of wind in the northwest. For decades, EWE has been supplying climate-friendly wind energy.

Photovoltaics
With high-performance photovoltaic modules and intelligent power storage systems, EWE produces renewable energy from the power of the sun.
At our company, the energy transition has been a reality for decades. Even though a large part of the electricity in our grids is based on renewable sources and therefore weather-dependent, EWE NETZ operates one of the safest power networks in all of Europe. This demonstrates that climate protection and reliable supply can go hand in hand. We work every day to shape the energy future. Today. Tomorrow. For generations.
