Positive Effects for the Region

EWE Strengthens the Entire Northwest

With its strong value creation, secure jobs, and regional roots, EWE is a stabilizing force and job engine for Northwest Germany. Beyond that, the company is equipping its home region for the future with its technological expertise.

The Entire Northwest Region of Germany Benefits from EWE
We are a stabilizing force and job engine for the Ems-Weser-Elbe area. With our value creation, we contribute to the economic growth of our home region. We also create jobs in the Northwest and train the skilled workers of tomorrow – one of the pillars of our social responsibility. And with our expertise in sustainable energy generation and distribution, as well as in the digitalization of cities and especially rural areas, we are making our home region technologically fit for the future.

Third Study on Regional Effects

The positive effects EWE has on the regional economy have increased significantly compared to 2019. This is the result of a study by the Conoscope Institute. For the third time, the consulting and research company based in Leipzig and Essen has analyzed the impact of EWE’s business activities. The study examines effects on three levels: In addition to direct effects (through EWE), it also considers indirect effects (at the supplier level) and induced effects (through consumer spending by EWE employees and employees of indirectly benefiting companies).

According to the study, EWE generated value creation of more than 3.2 billion euros (2019: 2.4 billion euros) in the Ems-Weser-Elbe region through its direct business activities and regional economic integration in fiscal year 2022. Each euro earned by EWE generated an additional 70 cents in the region (2019: 60 cents). Of every euro spent by EWE, 48 cents remained in the region. In addition, the company contributed 737.6 million euros (2019: 567 million euros) to the financing of public budgets in the state of Lower Saxony and local municipalities in fiscal year 2022.

EWE has also significantly expanded its role as a regional job engine compared to 2019. Each job at EWE enabled another 2.7 jobs at regional partners and service providers (2019: 2.1). The total income generated from these EWE-related jobs amounted to approximately 980 million euros (2019: 900 million euros).

How the Data is Collected

Thomas Lehr, Managing Director of Conoscope, explains:
“We have now conducted the third evaluation for EWE, which allows us to track the development of individual indicators over the years. The study is always based on data related to EWE’s procurement of goods and services, as well as the published key figures of the EWE Group from the completed fiscal year – in this case, 2022. We supplement these with current statistical data from various industries and take into account well-researched interdependencies within the economic system.

What’s remarkable is that EWE’s so-called regional incidence in the Ems-Weser-Elbe region – excluding energy purchases – stands at 48 percent. This means that every second euro spent flows directly into the region. Compared to other energy suppliers, EWE’s employment effect is also in the upper range – around 20,000 jobs in the region are tied to EWE through economic interlinkages.”

“EWE Significantly Increased Positive Effects”

“The figures speak for themselves: EWE strengthens the entire region and has significantly increased its positive effects across all areas,” says Stefan Dohler, CEO of EWE AG. “With our activities in energy and telecommunications supply, we create value within and beyond our majority municipally-owned company that reaches deep into people’s everyday lives.”

Currently, EWE’s most important task, according to Dohler, is the transformation of the energy system toward climate-neutral energy sources. “Of course, this requires a major financial effort, but we also see immense growth opportunities,” he says. EWE plans to invest up to 16 billion euros in this transformation over the next ten years. This includes building the northern German hydrogen economy, investing in onshore wind energy through its subsidiary Alterric, supporting electromobility and storage solutions, and strengthening the power grid for the ongoing expansion of PV systems, heat pumps, and charging stations.

“We have set EWE on a clear course in recent years – one that focuses not only on climate protection and fiber-optic expansion but also on a stronger regional focus,” Dohler continues. “We are increasingly relying on partnerships with local tradespeople, service providers, and industries to tap into the promising future potential of the region. The North has the potential to become the energy powerhouse of a climate-neutral Germany – and we are working toward this in close cooperation with many other stakeholders.”
