Plans for a new power cable between Norway and Germany

December 1, 2006. Kristiansand/Oldenburg. The two Norwegian groups Agder Energi and Lyse, the Swiss energy trading company EGL, and the German energy company EWE have agreed to develop a project to build a 570 km sub-sea power cable between Norway and Germany (NorGer).

By increasing the import capacity for electricity to Norway, the NorGer cable will make a significant contribution towards reduction of the present Norwegian electricity shortage in dry years. Moreover, NorGer will increase overall system stability and has considerable environmental benefits due to its potential to even out variations in the German wind-power system with Norwegian hydroelectricity instead of CO2-rich German coal and gas fuelled power generators.

The consortium has founded NorGer AS, a project company based in Kristiansand. In a first step NorGer will initiate preliminary technical and commercial preparations and obtain the necessary permits in Norway and Germany. Reliable energy supply and the reduction of CO2-emissions go in line with the strategic focus of the project partners.

Planned landing site in Norway is Feda (near Kristiansand), which is also the landing site of the cable under construction to the Netherlands. The Wilhelmshaven region is a possible landing site in Germany. The earliest possible start-up of operations for NorGer is 2011
Total investments for a 700 MW cable are estimated at approximately EUR 500 million.
