Three CFCL BlueGen units for EWE

Australien manufacturer's first fuel cell generators in Europe

Oldenburg/Heinsberg, Germany, 25 January 2010. North German energy service provider EWE and Australian-German fuel cell technology developer Ceramic Fuel Cells Limited (CFCL) have signed a cooperation agreement. The agreement is for an order of three BlueGen generators from CFCL to be delivered to EWE by the end of this year.

BlueGen is the latest product based on CFCL’s fuel cell technology for stationary use in Europe. The dishwasher-sized gensets use natural gas as their fuel and convert it into electric power and heat. The electricity can either be used directly in the building or fed into the public grid. As the heat can also be used - either for heating or to heat water - the units make energy -efficient and environmentally friendly use of the fuel.  This innovative solution based on combined heat and power (CHP) has great potential. Together with a conventional source of heating, it can meet the entire heating requirements of a family home.

Compared with separate power and heat generation, BlueGen gensetzs can reduce CO2 emissions significantly. In the micro-CHP segment, fuel cenlls deliver the greatest environmentel enefits. CO2 emissions are reduced by about 30 per cent. Using bio natural gas can further improve the CO2 rating.

EWE has been collaborating with CFCL since 2005 and will be installing and running the BlueGen generators in family homes in north-west Germany as part of a field trial.
