EWE: value creation partner for the Jemgum region
In the East Frisian region of Jemgum EWE expands its storage services segment for the external customers. The company plans to establish up to 15 natural gas caverns, each with a geometric volume of app. 700,000 cubic metres. EWE will make the majority of the storage capacity available to other companies. The storage plant will be constructed in the same salt dome which EWE uses for its Nüttermoor natural gas storage plant a few kilometres away. EWE plans to start filling the Jemgum caverns in 2013.
EWE works on the project jointly with the Wingas GmbH utility company based in Kassel. EWE and Wingas cooperate in the construction phase in order to make use of the synergy effects. EWE and Wingas will operate their storage facilities independently after the project is concluded.
In February 2010 EWE started to flush out the first caverns. The water needed to flush out the salt dome is taken from the Ems and transported to the North Sea through an about 40-kilometer-long brine-pipeline. EWE abides by stringent safety regulations and environmental considerations when planning and carrying out the projects.
