Biogas and biomass pioneers
EWE is also very involved in the fields of biomass and biogas. The company is setting the pace in these segments and has a wealth of technological expertise. A concrete example of this is the biogas processing plant in Werlte, Lower Saxony. At this location EWE operates the first biogas processing plant in northern Germany. The plant can feed up to three million cubic metres of biogas of the same quality as natural gas into the natural gas distribution network per year.
The biogas which is purified in Werlte is used in two ways. It is used in combined heat and power plants to produce energy. And of the fuel available at the round 80 petrol stations in the EWE supply area between the Ems, Weser and Elbe rivers, EWE contributes ten per cent biogas to the traditional natural gas.
EWE uses either biogas or biomass in the form of vegetable oil in combined heat and power plants. The power plants produce electricity and usable heat very efficiently. EWE primarily supplies the heat to customers which have high and consistent heat demands throughout the year.
EWE is also involved in the operation of a biomass heating power plant which burns scrap wood to produce electricity and heat. The heat produced in the Emden power plant is used among others by the neighbouring VW plant.
