RIFFGAT: Offshore wind farm in the North Sea
Riffgat Beteiligungs GmbH & Co. KG is a wholly owned subsidiary of EWE ENERGIE AG. Via this company EWE indirectly owns a 28.5 per cent share in Offshore-Windpark Riffgat GmbH & Co. KG, which is building the offshore wind farm 15 kilometres off the coast of the island of Borkum in the German North Sea. The company was founded in order to allow small-scale municipal utility companies to gain an indirect shareholding in the wind farm. EWE holds a further 61.5 per cent direct investment in the wind farm, meaning EWE thus owns 90 per cent of the shares. Initial construction work for the offshore park is to begin in 2011. The wind turbines are to be built across an area of six square kilometres (equivalent to 850 football pitches) and will generate enough electricity for around 100,000 households by the end of 2012.
