MVR - Müllverwertung Rugenberger Damm GmbH & Co. KG
MVR Müllverwertung Rugenberger Damm GmbH & Co. KG (MVR) uses thermal waste treatment to generate energy and other useful by-products. MVR is owned by Stadtreinigung Hamburg (25 per cent), Vattenfall Europe New Energy (VEN) (55 per cent) and EWE AG (20 per cent).
Reduce, reuse, remove – this is MVR's motto when it comes to disposing of domestic waste in Hamburg. With an annual throughput of up to 320,000 megagrams of domestic waste, it generates district heating and electricity, produces useful materials and virtually eliminates waste. The company places environmental protection on an equal footing with economic efficiency and occupational health and safety.
Using the energy inherent in the waste (thermal value), MVR produces district heating in the form of process steam and heating water. Electricity is also generated. MVR has been supplying the Neuhof industrial area of Hamburg with the resulting steam since 1999.
In addition to this, by-products of the waste incineration process are put to good use.
MVR's desulphurisation plant supplies fine gypsum, which is used to manufacture facing plaster in the construction industry following a drying phase. During exhaust gas cleaning, 10 to 12% raw hydrochloric acid is produced. This is processed to create chemically pure 30% hydrochloric acid. MVR also produces around 75,000 Mg of slag every year, which is an excellent material for road construction.
